Sticking Up For Little Brother

you thought I didn’t really notice. But I did. I wanted to high-five you.

Yesterday I had a pair of brothers in my store. One was maybe between 15-17. He was a wrestler at the local high school. Kind of tall, stocky and handsome. He had a younger brother, who was maybe about 10-12 years old. Thy were talking about finding a game for the younger one, and he was absolutely insisting it be one with a female charcter. I don’t know how many of y’all play games, but that isn’t exactly easy. Eventually, I helped the brothers pick a game called Mirror’s Edge. The youngest was pretty excited about the game, and then he specifically asked me.. “Do you have any girl color controllers?”

I directed him to the only colored controllers we have which includes pink and purple ones. He grabbed the purple one, and informed me purple was his FAVORITE.

The boys had been taking awhile, so their father eventually comes in. He see’s the game, and the controller, and starts in on the youngest about how he needs to pick something different. Something more manly. Something with guns and fighting, and certainly not a purple controller. He tries to convince him to get the new Zombie game “Dead Island.” and the little boy just stands their repeating “Dad, this is what I want, ok?” Eventually it turns into a full blown argument complete with Dad threatening to whoop his son if he doesn’t choose different items.

That’s when big brother stepped in. He said to his Dad “It’s my money, it’s my gift to him, if it’s what he wants I’m getting it for him, and if your gonna hit anyone for it, it’s going to be me.”

Dad just gives his oldest son a strong stern stare down, and then leaves the store. Little brother is crying quietly, I walk over and ruffle his hair (yes this happened all in front of me.) I say “I’m a girl, and I like the color blue, and I like shooting games. There’s nothing wrong with what you like. Even if it’s different that what people think you should.”

Big brother then leans down, kisses little brother on the head, and says “Don’t worry dude.”

They check out and leave, and all I can think is how awesome big brother is, how sweet little brother is, and how Dad ought to be ashamed for trying to make his son any other way.

This inspiring story is an adaption of a story I found elsewhere.

Semper Fidelis – The Duty Of A Marine

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

“Your son is here,” she said to the old man. She had to repeat the words several times before the patient’s eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man’s limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man’s hand and offering him words of love and strength. Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital – the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

“Who was that man?” he asked.

The nurse was startled, “He was your father,” she answered.

“No, he wasn’t,” the Marine replied.

“I never saw him before in my life.”

“Then why didn’t you say something when I took you to him?”

“I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn’t here. When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed.”

Our Beautiful World & Universe

The Vatican Museums spiral staircase is one of the most photographed in the world, and certainty one of the most beautiful.

Designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932, the broad steps are somewhere between a ramp and a staircase.

2012 New Year’s Resolution

Well, as 2011 winds down, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do in the 2012.  Of course, if the Mayans are right, this could be our last, so I guess I better make it count :)

I really want 2012 to be the best year ever, and return my life back to a lifestyle that I was once accustomed to.  In a nutshell, my focus for 2012 will be business growth and quality family time, and optimizing how I do both.

I’m posting my 2012 New Year’s resolutions publicly as a way to affirm to all what my intentions are.  Perhaps at the same time, it will give you some ideas of how you can change your life as well.

So without further ado, here’s the goals I have in mind for the year 2012:

Enjoy More Family Time

My family is everything I have, and yet I’ve neglected to prioritize them into my schedule.

This year I’ll spend more time playing family games with them, take them on at least one big family vacation (like a Disney Land cruise), and take them on day trips into the mountains, hiking trips, fishing and other fun places that we didn’t go to the last few years.  My kids are of the age now where they will remember what we do (or don’t do) together, and I want to give them the best memories ever that will last them a lifetime.

Become More Time Aware

It seems that this last year I’ve let time get ahead of me.  I’ve allowed unproductive things to become priorities, and prioritized things into the wrong order.

This year, I’m going to use a clock more, and actually keep track of how much time I’m spending on activities, and put important items on the calendar as blocks of time.

For instance, I’ll block out times to check and respond to email, rather than randomly opening my email 20 times a day, and prioritizing based on emails that come in.  That’s my email box running my life, and not the other way around.  I’m in charge here, not email messages.

This also means that I’ll be a bit more focused with FaceBook time too… I’ve had a lot of fun allowing myself to hop on FaceBook anytime I want to, and responding to chats in real-time.  But the truth is that this is preventing me from getting other things in life done that are much more important.

Sorry FaceBook friends – I’ll still be there for you, but only once or twice a day, and I’ll have a time limit to boot

Close Kettlewell Enterprises, Inc

I’ve been in the process of closing down our web development firm for 2 or 3 years now.  This year, it’s final.  We’re closing our doors to website development, and moving on with other larger endeavors and adventures.

My health doesn’t allow me to sit down for long periods at a time, so all development efforts that take a long period of time are out of the question.  So programming as a career are done, and I’ll be perusing other careers and adventures that don’t require me to sit down typing all day.

I’ll still maintain the clients I have, and recommend other web developers for them, and handle a few hand-picked cases for close friends, but for all intents and purposes, Kettlewell Enterprises, Inc is no longer in business.

Grow Cloopon, LLC

Cloopon is my latest endeavor, and promises to be a fun project that connects businesses to merchants throughout this valley.  It’s a group buying site, a lot like Groupon or Living Social is, but is specifically tailored to smaller metro areas like Grand Junction that the larger daily deal sites wont enter into.

I plan on having a successful system started right here in Grand Junction, Colorado, and expanding out into other regions of similar size in Colorado, and by years end, start entering other states and expanding into territories that are of similar size to Grand Junction.

Much of the system is written, and ready to implement, and we will start testing the waters with a hard launch on January 16, if we have a minimum of 20 businesses signed up with us.

To accomplish this, I’m going to be looking to hire extra help, including sales staff, web developers and top level executives that specialize in marketing, accounting, sales, technology and operations.

I will have my eyes out for a very specific person that can act as the company COO and by my right hand man (or woman) that is adventurous, has a history of success, can think big, and understands action.

Cloopon shall be a multi-million dollar operation by years end.

Open Success Hypnotics, LLC

I’ve had a love of the mind for most of my life.  I was hypnotizing friends when I was in middle school, and have always held the belief that hidden deep inside of us is a powerful key to thriving.

I’ve been intensifying my hypnotic training, and learning new techniques that weren’t available to me 20 years ago.  I will continue practicing these new techniques, and once perfected, I’ll open up shop – at least part time – to help others overcome obstacles in their lives, and become highly successful people.

The ultimate goals of Success Hypnotics, LLC, is to do research on the mind, and identify new techniques that will help humankind.  In particular, I believe that it is possible for all memories to be accessed directly – possibly instantly, but likely through a directed searching mechanism that can be done at a conscious level.

I also believe that our bodies can do a much better job of healing ourselves – both mentally, and physically – and I want to explore this possibility and take measurements that can provide irrefutable proof that hypnosis can heal the mind and body.

Find a Hypnotism Assistant

In order to open Success Hypnotics, LLC, I’ll require an assistant that I can practice techniques on to become proficient and to explore new techniques that will allow us to unlock the deepest parts of the mind.

This assistant will need to have an unwavering trust in me, in herself, and in in the hypnotic process.

Ideally this should be someone that believes in hypnosis, and wants to use hypnosis to enrich their own lives.  This position is a volunteer position (at first), and would require several sessions each week of constant practice.

If it’s possible, I’d like to find several qualified assistants so that I may practice even more.

Live Healthy and Reach Ideal Weight

As I’ve aged, I’ve found myself putting on a few pounds.  Nothing unhealthy, but more than I want. I’ve been eating more and more microwave too, out of convenience.

I did start to diet over the summer, but it fizzled around Thanksgiving time.

I plan on eating fewer calories, and continuing with the Atkins-like diet that we started – and continue until I’m down to my personal ideal weight of 140 – 145 pounds.

Further reduction of microwave meals for the family is also important, so that they can start life on the right foot, before they head out the door towards college, where microwave food is expected to be the norm.

I also will require myself to do more stretching exercises, to get my legs stretched out from years of sitting.  This will be crucial to getting me into a 100% pain-free environment.

New Car

We’ve been driving a mini-van for quite a few years, and it has almost 200K miles on it.  I think it’s time to get a new one.

In fact, one for a family car, and a special something for my wife (she totally deserves it).

Not sure I can get both this year, but we at least need to get a family car that has a few less miles on it, and a little more dependable :)

Bigger House

We’ve finally outgrown this house, so we’ll be looking for a 2000 sq ft house this spring or summer.  One that has a fenced in backyard with a nice lawn in it, and a garden area too!

I took the last year off from a garden, and I totally regret that!!  This year, we’re doing a garden again.

Blog For Fun

I’ve totally enjoyed this blog.  It’s been a nice expression of me, and encompasses a large part of the thinking process, from mild to wild.

I enjoy what this blog has done for me.  It’s allowed me to express myself in a way that no other medium can.  The only thing I want to do more of, is actual writing.  Thoughts, poems, quotes, analysis, stories, etc.  I have a lot of images and videos, but I want more writing.

I also want to see more text to go along with each photo, so that there is a brief explanation as to what I was thinking about when I inserted the image.

I also need to make sure that there are SEO descriptions with each post, so that when they are shared, the description gets shared along with it, so that an explanation goes along with each image / post.

Help With Jen’s New Career

Many of you know that my wife Jen Kettlewell has started in a new career path as well, and is going to be a loan originator for CMG Financial Services.

She has (at this time) taken and passed all exams and submitted her background checks and other information to be processed.  There is a 30-90 day wait period while that happens.

While that’s happening, I’m helping her establish herself as a top loan originator in this area, and we’ll expand out of this area once that happens.

I’ll be in charge of the online marketing effort for her, and will help her become top rated in every city and town that Jennifer Kettlewell wants to be the number one loan originator for.

———-

Well, those are my goals for 2012.  I’ve probably missed a few and will likely come back here and revise and edit my New Year’s goals of 2012, but for now, this is the essence of what I’m looking to accomplish.  A lot of 2012 will focus on acquiring new material items, and re-enforcing the love and support we have from within the family.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
