When Push Should Come to Pull

There are many marketing concepts that talk about push vs pull technologies, and how push technologies are fading out in favor of pull technologies like blogs, websites, books, and magazines.

But that’s not what this article is about.

In our house, we have a room that just won’t stay heated. And I use a little fan to heat it up by circulating the heat from the house into the room.

Now, if you don’t know me, I’m a computer science major with an extensive background in software engineering. So certain things I see differently, and just take for granted that everyone would see it my way. (after years of experience though, I’ve learned to take nothing for granted:)

Well, even my son didn’t see it my way, and asked “Dad, why do you have the fan pointed away from the cold room, and not pointing into the room… don’t you want to heat it up?”

My son is 12 years old, and had undergone some weather and life science classes, so I thought that I could reason with him about how warm air rises and cold air drops, followed by some air flow examples – basic life science knowledge perhaps, but after several minutes of explaining, I realized that I was taking basic knowledge, and applying it differently than most.

My 2 minute explanation was nearly a 15 minute lecture….. I stopped when the glazed eyes weren’t shimmering any more… Next time I may just re-assure him that the room is warming up. I think he would appreciate that.

Out of curiosity, I timed my results, and found that it takes only about 4 minutes by doing it my way, and about 30 minutes doing it the traditionally conceived way – a 26 minute savings!

So how does this apply to Internet Marketing? Well, it’s yet another prime example of “Thinking outside the box”. Just because everyone does it one way, doesn’t mean that it’s the best way. I trimmed off more than 25 minutes of warm-up time, just be reversing air flow – By pulling, instead of pushing.

Any martial artists reading this? Then you may be familiar with some of the “Flow with the punches” phrases, where you don’t want to push your opponent, but instead, pull him in and control the situation on your terms.

These are but a few examples.

There are many more examples of the push Vs pull mentality in life, and in reading about the lives of some of the most under-dogged entrepreneurs, you are likely to find lots of information on the subject, because they lived it… and were successful because of it.
